Leslie “Jim” Sweger, 94, of Wells Valley, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Thursday, October 24, at UPMC Bedford.
Born June 22, 1930, he was the son of the late Calvin and Lillian (Ryder) Sweger. He was united in marriage to Zenda “Susie” Shaw on May 16, 1953. She preceded him in death on March 7, 2009.
He is survived by six children: Debbie Rotz (wife of Neil) of Waterfall, Donnie (husband of Yvonne) of Wells Tannery, Brian (husband of Wanda) of Waterfall, Jon (husband of Tammy) of Waterfall, Jodi Ling of Bedford and Betina Gutshall (wife of Jim) of Shiremanstown.
He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren as well as a brother, Dale (husband of Janet) of Honey Grove, and a sister, Helen Briner of the state of Indiana.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Sweger.
Jim moved to northern Fulton County as a youngster along with his baby sister Peggy and resided with his uncle and aunt, the late Bruce and Lois Appleby of Wells Valley. He was a 1949 graduate of Hustontown High School.
He was a Korean War veteran having served in the U.S. Army as a welder from 1950 to 1952. He was a member of the American Legion Post 561 in McConnellsburg for over 75 years.
He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot as a welding supervisor. Following retirement, he assisted local excavator Sam Slates with various projects.
In Jim’s younger years, he enjoyed bowling, going to auctions and was an avid hunter. He was a member of the New Grenada Hunting Gang along with his dear friend, the late Ellis Yingling. He attended Center United Methodist Church, was a former member of I.O.O.F. Waterfall Lodge #773 and served Wells Township residents for several years on the Board of Supervisors.
He was easily recognizable with his handlebar mustache and quick smile.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 31, 2024 at the M. R. Brown Funeral Home, 301 Pitt St., Hustontown, PA with Pastor Rebecca Cutchall officiating. Interment will be made at Bethel Cemetery, New Grenada, PA. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
