Freda W. Cromer

Freda W. Cromer, 94, of Forbes Trail Road, McConnellsburg, PA, died Monday, June 2, 2025 at her home.

Mrs. Cromer was born in January 1931 in Chambersburg to the late William Morse and Blanche Marie Warthin.  She grew up in McConnellsburg, and graduated from McConnellsburg High School in 1948.  Freda was the first in her family to attend college.  She graduated from Shippensburg Teachers College in 1952 and received two masters degrees from Shippensburg University in 1978.  

She married her husband of 62 years, R. Boyd Cromer in 1952.  Boyd preceded her in death in 2015.  They happily raised their family of five children on the dairy farm near Ft. Littleton.  These children survive, Robert W. “Robbie” Cromer, Ft. Littleton; Ann Cromer Gray, New Market, MD;  Barbara Jo Dolan, Laurel, MD; Timothy Boyd Cromer, Mercersburg; Ned Morse Cromer, Ft. Littleton.  There are eleven grandchildren:  Jeremy Cromer. Jessica Genthner, Eric Cromer, Becky Shoemaker, Daniel Gray, Will Gray, Rachel Dolan, Emily Buhrman, Scott Cromer, Lara Cromer, and Kevin Hinkle.  Freda was further blessed with great grandchildren:  Eli, Maisie, Blakely, Carigan, Bryce, Dawson, Coulson, Alysa, Tanner, Raelynn, and Emberlynn.  She is also survived by two siblings, William Warthin and Lucille Warthin.  Esther Webb, Connie Coleman and Larry Warthin preceded her in death.

She began her teaching career at Ft. Littleton Elementary as a sixth grade teacher.  She spent most of her years as a first grade teacher at Wells-Taylor Elementary and retired after 34 years.  She loved seeing her students in the community.

Her faith, church, and children were very important to her, she served as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent at Ft. Littleton Methodist Church.  She also served as Deacon, Elder, and Presbyter for the McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir.  

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 6, 2025 at the McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church, 125 S. Second St., McConnellsburg, PA with Rev. Dale Williams officiating. Interment will be made at Fort Littleton Cemetery.  Friends may call at the M.R. Brown Funeral Home, 301 Pitt St., Hustontown PA 6 - 8 PM on Thursday and at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.
